Last Update: 11/3/2015 Please refer to corresponding Change History document for more information on new features and modifications. 1.0 Overview 2.0 Installation and Setup Instructions 3.0 Configuration Information 4.0 Unattended Mode 5.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 6.0 Trademarks and Notices 7.0 Disclaimer 1.0 Overview _____________ 1.1 Overview of this code The IBM EXP3500/DCS3700/EXP3800 ESM update contains ESM firmware updates for the EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E, EXP3512, and EXP3524-all models storage expansion enclosures. The latest microcode (firmware) level for the ESMs in the EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E, EXP3512, and EXP3524 storage expansion enclosures, respectively is v3.9C. 1.2 Limitations The recommended DS3500, DCS3700 and DCS3860 controller firmware levels for this update is: Model Type Firmware DS3512 (all models) 08.20.xx.00 DS3524 (all models) 08.20.xx.00 1818 model 80C 08.20.xx.00 1818 model 80C Performance Moduel Controller 08.20.xx.00 1818 model 90C 08.20.xx.00 DCS3860 86C 08.20.xx.00 DCS3860 96C 08.20.xx.00 1.3 Enhancements See corresponding Change History document for more information. 1.4 Level of Recommendation IBM considers this update to be required for all customers who attach the IBM EXP3800 to a DCS3860, DCS3700 model 80E to a DCS3700 or DCS3860 96C and an EXP35xx to a DS3500 Storage Controller Subsystem. The IBM EXP3800 ESM, DCS3700 model 80E and EXP3500 ESM FRU replacements may be at a different ESM firmware version than the surviving ESM in an EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E and EXP3500. If the replacement ESM is not at the same ESM level as the surviving ESM, the new IBM EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E and EXP3500 expansion enclosure supports automatic ESM firmware synchronization. When you install a new ESM into an existing EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E or EXP3500 that is attached to a DCS3860, DCS3700 model 80E or DS3500 storage subsystem that supports automatic ESM firmware synchronization, this feature resolves firmware mismatch conditions by automatically synchronizing the firmware in the new ESM with the firmware in the existing ESM. To enable automatic ESM firmware synchronization: 1. Verify that the EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E or DS3500 Storage Manager Event Monitor is installed and running. 2. Verify that the DCS3860, DCS3700, or DS3500 storage subsystem that the expansion is attached to is defined in the Enterprise Management window of the DCS3860/DCS3700/DS3500 Storage Manager client. If the automatic ESM firmware synchronization is not enabled, ESM firmware upgrade can be manually initiated via the menu options in the Subsystem Management window. If a replacement ESM is installed and it has a different ESM firmware version then the surviving ESM, will register an ESM hardware or firmware mismatch error in the Recovery Guru. The new ESM will function, but long term operation with mismatched ESM firmware in an expansion enclosure is not recommended. 1.5 Dependencies IMPORTANT: Always check the DCS3860, DCS3700, or DS3500 storage subsystem controller firmware README for any required minimum version of the attached drive expansion enclosure ESM firmware for that particular controller firmware release. Update the ESM firmware using the Storage Manager software. Be sure to follow the following list of prerequisites before updating hard disk or ESM firmware. - If multiple storage expansion enclosures are selected for ESM firmware updating at the same time, all IO activity must also be stopped. If you are unsure about the sequence of firmware updates for the various components storage subsystem configuration, please call IBM Support at 1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) before proceeding with the firmware upgrades. ___________________________ 2.0 Installation and Setup ___________________________ Applying updates to the EXP3800, DCS3700 model 80E or EXP3500 using the DS Storage Manager client version v11.20 and later. a) Go to the support tab in the Subsystem Management window and select Download Firmware. b) Select Download ESM Firmware. c) Select the Drive enclosure(s) that are being updated. d) Select the correct ESM firmware file and select Start. NOTE: ESM firmware download should be performed with all IO quiesced. Allow approximately 5-10 minutes per ESM to complete the firmware update. ______________________________ 3.0 Configuration Information ______________________________ There is no special configuration required. _____________________ 4.0 Unattended Mode _____________________ See the appropriate application tools for any possible unattended mode operations. _______________________________________ 5.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number _______________________________________ 5.1 IBM System Storage Disk Storage Systems Technical Support web site: http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/disk 5.2 IBM System Storage Marketing Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/disk 5.3 IBM System Storage Interoperation Center (SSIC) web site: http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/ssic/ 5.4 You can receive hardware service through IBM Services or through your IBM reseller, if your reseller is authorized by IBM to provide warranty service.
