IBM® Rational® Developer for Power Systems Software(TM) V8.5 includes a rich set of integrated development tools for C/C++ on AIX® and Linux®, COBOL on AIX, RPG and COBOL on IBM i, and Java(TM), with capabilities such as file management, searching, editing, analysis, build, and debug all integrated into an Eclipse workbench.
Built on Eclipse 3.6.2, an extensible platform for constructing and integrating software tools, IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software is a part of the IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform series of products.
You can download a full electronic image of 8.5 or order the physical media using Passport Advantage or AAS. For more information, refer to Download DCF at the following address: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24032488
If you have the version 8.5 media or installation files, see the IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software V8.5 Installation Guide (InstallationGuide.html), which can be viewed from the installation launchpad. The installation guide has information about installing IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software, V8.5, including hardware and software requirements. This file is also stored in the documents directory on the product DVD.
The English version of the Installation Guide is available at the following address: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27024935
For details on problems fixed in this release, refer to the Fix List document.
Updates, limitations, and known problems about IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software are documented in the product library at the product Web site for IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software (http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/products/rdp/). For a list of updates and APARs, go to the Web site and find the link for Product support in the Overview page, then choose the Downloads or Troubleshooting task.
As limitations and problems are discovered and resolved, the IBM Software Support team updates the knowledge base (see http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/Overview/Software/Rational/Rational_Developer_for_Power_Systems_Software). By searching the knowledge base, you can quickly find workarounds or solutions to problems that you experience.
The following are the known product limitations or issues:
- Thread-specific breakpoints must be set from breakpoints view.
- If a Watch breakpoint is set for a variable that is initialized in a COBOL data section, when the memory change is triggered by the initialization, the debugger stops at the first line in the source.
- At some program locations, the Variables view context menu action "Filter Local -> Show static variable from the file scope" does not show the static variables from the file scope. It is possible to view the value of such variables by creating a Monitor for them in the Monitors view.
- The default editor for C/C++/COBOL source must not be changed from the install settings. If a different editor is set as the default, the debugger will not display source. Switching "File associations" back to the install defaults will resolve the problem.
- If you have multiple debug sessions of the same application stopped in the same source file, you will see a current instruction pointer, and associated highlighted line, for each debug session.
- Software firewalls may prevent the debug daemon from listening or receiving connections on the selected local port (8001 by default). You must open the port(s) on which the debug daemon will be listening.
- Windows® Firewall (and possibly other software firewalls) may prevent the connection, even if you have opened the port in the firewall. If this is the case, check that the program "%RDPOWER_INSTALLATION_DIRECTORY%\jdk\jre\bin\javaw.exe" is permitted to accept incoming connections. In Windows Firewall, on the Exceptions tab, this program may have the name: Java(TM) Platform SE binary.
A number of hex code characters that represent 5250 display attributes are commonly inserted into comment lines of source members. These characters would usually be rendered by client operating systems as a square box or other special symbol. In Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, the operating system no longer renders many control characters, including the hex codes for 5250 display attributes. Instead of a square box, a zero width character is rendered by the operating system, which is invisible. This causes the remainder of the text on the comment line to appear shifted over by one column to the left in Remote Systems LPEX Editor.
This does not affect compilation of the source, as the hex code characters are still being maintained and saved. However, the source will appear as if it is not lined up with the column rulers.
The operating system controls how characters are rendered and displayed in all applications, including Remote Systems LPEX Editor. As long as the underlying operating system does not support rendering of these characters, Remote Systems LPEX Editor will not support them.
The language aware features of the C/C++ tooling and the expression evaluator of the debugger at this time support the ISO C '99 and C++ 2003 standards. You may edit, compile, and debug programs that use newer language extensions (subject to support by the compiler you are using), but the tools will not be able to parse these extensions. Using such extensions in your programs may cause some features of the tooling to operate in a degraded manner. For example, content assist in code that uses newer constructs will not work properly, nor will you be able to evaluate expressions in the Expressions view that use newer constructs.
