After applying 1022.1, replace any backups taken at earlier levels with a new backup of the 1022.1 or later level. * Starting with HMC V10 R1, on ppc64, when installing HMC from Recovery media the GRUB menu now shows 2 installation options: o Install Hardware Management Console o Install Hardware Management Console (PowerVM) * First select to start in Service mode (SMS Menu) to allow the GRUB menu to be displayed, then o If installing HMC on Physical Appliance (7063-CR1 or 7063-CR2), then choose the other option - ‘Install Hardware Management Console’ o If installing vHMC on PowerVM, select 'Install Hardware Management Console (PowerVM) ' Upgrade notes * The minimum HMC levels required to upgrade to HMC V10 R1 M1010 are: o HMC V9 R2 o HMC V9 R1 + Mandatory fix for vHMC on x86: MH01857 + Mandatory fix for vHMC on PowerVM and 7063 Machine type: MH01858 o Note: vHMCs previously upgraded from V8 that have 160GB drive are not supported for upgrade. Install a new V9 or V10 image with the larger drive and file system. * Minimum memory supported for vHMC is 16GB and disk size should be 500GB. * HMC V10 R1 M1010 provides support for managing Power10, POWER9 & POWER8 processor-based systems. * Management of POWER7 and older servers is not supported by HMC V10. Attempts to manage POWER7 and older servers will result in a connection state of Version Mismatch and connection_error_code “Connection not allowed 0009-0008-00000000”. * HMC V10 R1 M1010 supports the following HMC models: o x86 : KVM, XEN, ESXi (6.0 / 6.5 / 7.0) o ppc64le : 7063-CR1, 7063-CR2, vHMC on PowerVM (POWER8, POWER9 & Power10 processor-based systems) * HMC V10 R1 M1010 does _not_ support 7042 models. * If two HMCs manage the same server, both HMCs must be at the same version, release and maintenance level. * It is recommended to have all connected VIOS servers on the latest level i.e., Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) level 3.1.x. To use all the new features available in V10 HMC, ensure all Virtual I/O Servers are at level 3.1.3, or later. * All running partitions (AIX, Linux, and VIOS) should be at Reliable Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) version 3.2.0.0, or later. It is recommended to have AIX 7.1 TL4 or higher and AIX 7.2 TL0 or higher; these levels contain RSCT 3.2.1.0. * Starting with hmcV10.1.1010.0, HMC supports HTTP2 protocol along with HTTP1.1. Users or applications using CURL as the REST client may see connection issues depending on the versions of curl being used. Suggest to use '--http1.1' as the CURL argument if it fails to connect by default over HTTP2. * Starting with V10 R1 M1010, http response status message is no longer present in the Rest API response (which was an optional field for earlier versions). REST API clients should depend on the status code instead of status message to validate the success/failure of the API. For details on steps to enable secure boot on the HMC see: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6489435 * Replaced objectionable terminology across the HMC, including the GUI, REST API, command line, and messages. Changes in the following functions were made: o Power Enterprise Pools: master is replaced by controller o Data Replication: master is replaced by primary, and slave is replaced by secondary o PowerVM NovaLink Co-management: master is replaced by controller Back to top <#ibm-content> General fixes * Fixed LDAP user creation using HMC CLI to ensure the user inputs is validated. * Users configured for Kerberos authentication that have an expired password will fail to logon with a generic logon failure message. The user must reset their kerberos password to log on to the HMC. * Fixed an issue when lslic is run against the same server at the same time from the same HMC where one instance performing cleanup of downloaded files will cause the other instance to fail and return "/unavailable/" with /rc=0/. * Fixed a rare issue with the controller HMC for a Power enterprise pool that caused the HMC GUI to become unresponsive and eventually to hang. This problem can occur when there are a large number of HMCs managing a Power enterprise pool and there is an HMC that is not responding to Power enterprise pool requests from the controller HMC. * Improved Remove and Add FRU performance on IO adapters used as VIOS backing devices with variable times. * Fixed "pedbg -c -q 8" command execution that throws error while collecting the Cloud Connector logs. * Revised the wording on an an email notification for Serviceable Events when an Infocenter explanation is not available. * The HMC will now send a notification when a new service event occurs but is held for call home approval by Events Manager for Call Home. * Improved the error message returned on a LPM operation of an IBM i partition where the migration readiness command times out. The old message was a generic "/HSCL9001 The operation has failed on the management system/". The new message is "/IBM i partition {0} failed to respond the management console's request to perform a check for migration readiness. The partition is not ready to be migrated at this time. Try the operation again later./" * Fixed a problem where a DLPAR add memory error was not reported for IBM i partitions. * Fixed a rare issue that caused a Power enterprise pool to be deleted from the HMC during a restart of the HMC. * Updated the *rrstartlpar *command man page to document the existing return code of 93. A return code of 93 indicates that remote restart validation was successful, except for virtual fibre channel adapter and storage validation which could not be performed because the partition was active on the source system. * Fixed the partitions view table issue where the top row was being clipped off when there are more partitions than the grid can hold at a time. * Fixed a generic "/00FF unknown error/" message, when user opens 5250 IBM i Console for the same partition that is already open on another HMC. The new message is "/Too many connections/". * Fixed an issue with SRR/DR operation that was restarting with the previous collected data which is stale. * Fixed an issue that causes the HMC to report E212E161 SRC due to too many open files. * Fixed an issue with creating sysplan resulting in exception : "/Exception Occurred - Message: null Cause: null/" when a partition name contains a comma character. * Fixed an issue that caused the threshold value to be reset when another threshold value is modified from the modify Cluster Tier wizard. * Fixed location codes visibility issues in the IBM i Tagged IO panel, when the IBM i partition is having Physical IO connected to it. * Fix hardware clock not in sync with NTP * Fixed an issue where webui ciphers are reset to default and any previous changes are lost, after a service pack or iFix is applied. * Fixed an error on deploy system template where the deploy fails with "/REST0126 Please find error details below [An error occurred while creating the partition named {}. , HSCL1466 The partition specified is not valid. Rebuild the managed system and try again. ]"/ * Fixed an issue with stale vNIC mapping during remote restart or DR restart when the respective backing device has been modified using dlpar. * Fixed a rendering issue with vterm on a local hmc session where it renders as a long vertical window with the font double spaced when any command is executed. * Fixed an issue where a virtual network may show 802.1q tagging true when it is not tagged. * Fixed error "/HSCL3670 There was an error accessing the management console persistent storage area./" that prevented user from changing SR-IOV physical port attributes via UI or CLI when RoCE adapters are used. * Fixed PCM dashboard opening issue seen only in certain languages such as Polish, Italian, etc. * Fixed an issue with the network boot of a partition via GUI causing failure when 'no' is selected for "/Would you like to configure the client's network after the installation [yes]/no?/ " option. * Fixed a rare problem where performing concurrent bi-directional LPM with redundant MSPs may intermittently fail with error message "/HSCLB98A The redundant mover server partition (MSP) mapping selection is not valid. When using redundant MSPs, the same number of source and destination MSPs must be selected for a migration operation./" * Add function to chprimhmc command to allow a user to initiate primary monitor arbitration for which HMC processes problems events from the server. * Fixed an issue where a HMC shutdown or restart may be delayed for up to 10 minutes if a serviceable event without a parts list is received just prior to the reboot. * Update logic to report serviceable events that arrive within 5 seconds of each other that share the same reference code but report different locations. HMC will report these as separate service events instead of duplicates of the first. * Fix trap description translation issue with add SNMP trap panel. * Fixed an issue with deploy partition template with an empty partition name. An error message is shown to the user but after pressing cancel on the error the create partition can not be used to create the partition. * Fix an issue where updating HMC using virtual media on CR2 fails with "/Media Services Error. The media contains an unrecognized filesystems. Please make sure that the media is properly formatted.// //Would you like to try to use the media again?// // ACT02065"/ * Fixed an issue with the HMC Guided Setup wizard, where if the user enters an SMTP server and port and then add /edit/ remove emails, the server and port changes will be lost. * Fixed an issue where two users, on two different sessions using the same hmc user, deploy partition template at same time to same server can cause the deploy to fail. Command Line Changes * The *chpwrmgmt *and *lspwrmgmt *commands have been enhanced to support new power saver modes for Power10 servers. * The *chsyscfg*, *lssyscfg *and *mksyscfg *commands have been enhanced to support the Power10 processor compatibility mode. * The *lscod *and *lssyscfg *commands have been enhanced to support AIX Update Access Keys. * The *lslparmigr *command has been enhanced to include MSP network adapter information. * A new option has been added to the *chhwres *command to switch over all vNICs from one VIOS to other VIOSs. * The following commands have been added to support VIOS backup and restore: *chviosbk*, *cpviosbk*, *lsviosbk*, *mkviosbk*, *rmviosbk*, *rstviosbk*. * A new option has been added to the *chhmcusr *command to enable an HMC user that was disabled due to inactivity. * The following commands have been enhanced to support the addition of the user inactivity expiration property to HMC password policies: *chpwdpolicy*, *lspwdpolicy*, *mkpwdpolicy*. * The *chhmcusr *command has been enhanced to change the HMC default setting for the amount of time an HMC user is suspended from logging in to the HMC GUI or REST interface after reaching the maximum number of login attempts. * New options have been added to the *chhmc *and *lshmc *commands to set and display user-defined information, such as HMC location, for the HMC. * The *chdatarep *and *lsdatarep *commands have been enhanced to support data replication for groups. * A new option has been added to the *lshmc *command to display HMC secure boot settings (7063-CR2 HMC only). * The following commands have been updated to replace objectionable terminology. The objectionable terminology was deprecated and removed from the command documentation, however it will still be accepted. On *ls* commands, the objectionable attributes will still be output but only when specified with -F. o *chcodpool*, *lscodpool*: master has been replaced with controller o *chcomgmt*, *lscomgmt*: master has been replaced with controller o *lsdatarep*: slave has been replaced with secondary Performance & Scale * With V9 R2 M950 or later, a single HMC can manage up to 48 systems & 2000 partitions across the systems being managed by HMC with minimum requirements as below o 16GB memory for 1-500 partitions o 32 GB memory for 500-2000 partitions * For maximum number of systems and partitions when HMC is used in combination with CMC, PowerVC, VM HA/DR, please refer to the corresponding product documentation. For other configuration requirements for Version 9 Virtual HMC Appliance, please refer to Installing the HMC virtual appliance. Known issues and Limitations * System firmware cannot be updated on both BMC and FSP system types at the same time from the firmware update wizard. * Restoring the SSP backup on VIOS can fail at the first attempt with RMC going down. When such an issue is observed, wait for RMC to come up on its own (RSCT services on VIOS restarted on its own) and retry the restore. * While removing a virtual network, UI shows "/Internal error/" when there is a stale trunk adapter in the system. Reloading the UI or refreshing the browser should solve the issue. * User shall see Various Invalid Validation errors when configuring the backing device capacity for VNIC in Deploy Partition Template Wizard. * When configure multiple logical ports in Deploy Partition Template panel, issue can be seen with available capacity. * In the GUI, last RoCE logical port remains in the table view, even after removing it. Refreshing the browser should clear the table. * After PCM data migration from HMC 942 to 1010 level, PCM data fails to be retrieved. * In the Add Network wizard, moving back and forth the panels causes incorrect values to be displayed for 802.1q vlan id and load group. * Login fails if the Kerberos username is different from the remote user id even though password and other configurations are correct. Make sure both Kerberos user id/name is same as id/name of the remote user. * Rarely, following backup restore, attempts to login fails from GUI. Users will have to restart HMC to restore the access. * Hardware images for 78D8 and 78D6 are missing in the sysplan viewer under Hardware section in sysplan view from GUI. * When a Kerberos user attempts to login with an expired password an access denied message is shown instead of a password expiration message. * If current encryption in webui cipher is set to only one cipher TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 , HMC will not work with error as SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP. Adding back the other removed ciphers manually will solve the problem. * When addressing Power Interface Card Cable related errors on System Control Unit (i.e.: U78xx.SC1.xxxxxx-P1-C1-T1; U78xx.SC1.xxxxxx-P1-C2-T1), Repair Panel (both Repair & Verify or Exchange FRU) cannot be launched from the System Control Unit end where the hardware location cannot be found. Workaround is to launch the repair panel from the System Node end. * The reset of an expired password of a Kerberos user is not supported in multi-realm configuration setups since release V9 R2 950. When such users try to login using GUI, they will get message as Invalid credential. Upon login from CLI, users may see below or similar messages. /Password:// //Password expired. Change your password now.// //Current password:// //Current Password:// //Password change failed. Server message: Old password not accepted.// //Current Password:// //Password change failed. Server message: Old password not accepted.// //Current Password:// //New password:// //Retype new password:// //Password change failed. Server message: Old password not accepted./ *Circumvention*: Change or reset the password first, then log into HMC. Best Practices * User sessions - The following best practices helps avoid performance degradation gradually over a period of time due to increased login sessions as well as security vulnarabilities such as unauthorized access to the active HMC sessions. o It is a best practice to logoff from HMC UI and then close the browser tab instead of directly closing the tab o Set Idle session timeout for all the users and not leave the timeout as '0' which leaves it as no timeout. Virtual HMC Appliance supports install into PowerVM LPARs. * Call home of serviceable events with a failing MTMS of the HMC itself is disabled. Those serviceable events should be manually reported to IBM software support. * To see if you are running on a virtual HMC use the lshmc -v command. If it displays a UVMID field, then you are running in a virtual machine. Example: lshmc -v "vpd=*FC ???????? *VC 20.0 *N2 Fri Sep 17 07:19:44 UTC 2021 *FC ???????? *DS Hardware Management Console *TM V2f7-f35 *SE 2c44350 *MN IBM *PN N/A *SZ 7768158208 *OS Embedded Operating Systems *NA 127.0.0.1 *FC ???????? *DS Platform Firmware *RM V10R1.1010.0 **UVMID 2f7f:352c:443f:4350* " * When deploying a virtual HMC, if the mac address is not specified, it will be generated by the hypervisor.
