Upgrading to HMC V7 R7.3.0 from lower HMC releases can require special upgrade steps. Find basic steps and instructions for upgrading the HMC to HMC V7 R7.3.0 from lower releases, including from HMC 6.1.2 through HMC 7.3.5.0.

Upgrading to HMC V7 R7.3.0 from lower HMC releases

This package represents the Recovery image with which you can upgrade your HMC from HMC V6 R1.3.0, or higher, to HMC V7 R7.3.0. You can also use this package to install a clean version of HMC V7 R7.3.0. You can reference this package by APAR MB03480.

Package notes

• Upgrading from HMC Version 6
  1. You must apply PTF MH01127 (APAR MB02828) to upgrade from HMC V6R1.3 to HMC V7R3.1.0.
  2. You must apply PTF MH01135 (APAR MB02661) to upgrade from HMC V7R3.1.0 to HMC V7R7.3.0
  3. The DHCP range choices of 9.6.24.x and 9.6.25.x are no longer available as DHCP server range selections in the HMC GUI for V7. The POWER 595 FHA/FHB system internal network utilizes this range. If a V6 HMC is upgraded to V7 and a POWER 595/FHA system addition is planned, change the range to an alternate available selection prior to introducing the system to the HMC. For all other system environments the range can still be used but is not visible in the GUI.
• HMC Model 7310-C03 cannot be upgraded to HMC Version 7.7. If an HMC is used to manage any POWER7 processor-based server, the HMC must be a model CR3, or later-model, rack-mount HMC, or a model C05, or later-model, desk-side HMC.
• When IBM Systems Director is used to manage an HMC or if the HMC manages more than 254 partitions, the HMC should have a minimum of 3GB of RAM and be CR3 model or later rack-mount or C06 or later deskside. You should use HMCs with 4GB RAM and 4 cores for supporting 1,000 LPARs.
• HMC Version 7.7.1 supports managing a maximum of 48 servers (that are not Power 590/595 models) or 32 IBM Power 590/595 servers with a maximum of 1024 partitions across the managed servers.
• The following HMC System Plan functions are not implemented for servers based on POWER7 technology:
  • Create system plan (mksysplan) capture of VIOS provisioning info (storage pools, etherchannels, shared ethernet adapters)
  • Deploy system plan Auto-install of VIOS, AIX and Linux partitions.
  • Auto-provision storage pools, shared ethernet adapters and etherchannels by system plan deployment.
• During a recovery situation requiring a restore of critical console data, the HMC V7R730 recovery media should be installed followed immediately by the installation of the mandatory PTF MH01257. Once the HMC has rebooted, the critical console data can be restored by selecting the "HMC Management" menu and then the "Restore HMC Data" submenu. PTF MH01257 is required in order to restore the HMC backup data successfully.

This package provides the following new function and enhancements:

General

• Added the ability to tag virtual Ethernet adapters for console on IBM i partitions
• Updated reference code description list for POWER 7.
• Added support for IBM i Hibernation.
• Added support for Trial Live Partition Mobility for POWER7-based servers with 730 firmware. After you purchase and activate PowerVM Standard Edition on your server, you can obtain a Trial Live Partition Mobility code that allows you to use full Live Partition Mobility capability on your server at no charge for a trial period.
• The size of the Hardware Page Table (HPT) for a partition can be configured in partition profiles. This function is supported for all POWER5, POWER6, and POWER7 servers, and is only available in the command line interface.
• Added the ability to group partitions to improve memory to processor affinity.

• Added the chpsm and lspsm CLI commands. These two commands provide a new way to manage RMC communication priority by interface.
• Added the chnportlogin and lsnportlogin commands.
  1. The chnportlogin command allows you to perform N Port login and logout operations for virtual fibre channel client adapters that are configured in a partition or a partition profile. Use this command to help you in zoning WWPNs on a Storage Area Network (SAN). A login operation activates all inactive WWPNs, including the second WWPN in the pair assigned to each virtual fibre channel client adapter. This feature is particularly useful for Logical Partition Migration. A logout operation deactivates all WWPNs not in use. A successful login of a virtual fibre channel adapter requires that the corresponding virtual fiber channel server adapter must exist and that it must be mapped.
  2. The lsnportlogin command also allows you to list WWPN login status information for virtual fibre channel client adapters configured in partitions or partition profiles.

Command line

• The following commands have been added to aid in zoning WWPNs on a Storage Area Network (SAN):
  • chnportlogin: Performs N_Port login and logout operations for virtual fibre channel client adapters
  • lsnportlogin: Lists WWPN login status information for virtual fibre channel client adapters
• The following commands have been added to manage which HMC network interfaces are enabled or disabled for partition communication:
  • chpsm - changes which HMC network interfaces are enabled or disabled for partition communication
  • lspsm - lists the HMC network interfaces that are enabled for partition communication
  • The --lparcomm option on the chhmc command has been deprecated.
• The chhwres command has been enhanced to allow removal of processors and physical I/O from shutdown partitions. It has also been enhanced to remove processors and memory from suspended partitions (chhwres was enhanced to remove memory from shutdown partitions in HMC V7.3.4.0).
• The following commands have been enhanced to support partition processor and memory affinity groups (POWER7 servers only): chsyscfg, lssyscfg, and mksyscfg.
• The following commands have been enhanced to support user configuration of the Hardware Page Table size for a partition: chsyscfg, lssyscfg, mksyscfg and lshwres.
• The mksyscfg command has been enhanced to support saving the current configuration of a partition to an existing partition profile.
• The following commands have been enhanced to allow an HEA logical port to be the alternate restart device for an IBM i partition: chsyscfg, mksyscfg, and chhwres.
• The chlparstate command has been enhanced to support suspend and resume operations for IBM i partitions.
• The chlparstate command has been enhanced to support the forced shutdown of a migrating partition. This function should be used carefully as manual intervention may be required to recover the failed migration after the partition is shut down.
• A new option, --all, has been added to the chsysstate command to cause the specified operation to be performed for all managed systems or all partitions. This option is supported for the following managed system operations: power on, power off, restart, and rebuild. This option is supported for the following partition operations: activate with current configuration, shut down, and restart.
• 3 new attributes related to partition processor utilization have been added to the lslparutil command. The 3 new attributes are idle_cycles, run_latch_cycles, and run_latch_instructions.
• The rmdump command has been added to remove a managed system dump or a managed frame dump from the HMC.
• The chhmcfs and lshmcfs commands have been enhanced to include the /extra file system since that file system may now contain managed system dumps and managed frame dumps.
• The lsiotopo command has been added to display the physical I/O slot topology of a managed system. This command is useful for displaying the physical I/O slot topology of multi-node managed systems.
• A new option, --scope, has been added to the chhmcldap command to allow a subtree search.
• The mksysplan command once again gathers information from Virtual I/O Server partitions on POWER5 and POWER6 servers.

The following fixes are included in this package:

General fixes

• Changed dlpar panels to provide amount of resources available from powered off partitions. Also changed properties on the server to include the pending available amount when current and pending are different.
• Fixed a rare problem where creating a system plan with hardware discovery could leave an existing powered off partition in an error state with reference code AA00E158.
• Fixed a problem with Vterm line wrapping.
• Save current configuration of an lpar may fail with error "HSCL0017 Could not create the partition profile in the profile data" The error occurs if there are some virtual ethernet adapters present in a running partition, additional virtual Ethernet adapters are added dynamically, and the newly added ethernet adapter's vlan ids overlap the vlan ids of any of the existing adapters.
• Fixed a problem where memory values of a partition may show an incorrect value if a user issues a rebuild while the server is in powered off state and the server LMB size is greater than 64MB.
• Fixed a problem where DHCP server settings and discovery of clients would not fully take affect without a reboot of the HMC. The two scenarios fixed are: 1) During HMC installation on a private network, the HMC server is configured as a DHCP Server and if the hostname is left untouched (editing hostname reboots HMC) and at the end of the installation the reboot option is not taken, the CECs that are on this private network are assigned a IP but do not get added to the HMC. 2) If the private network's address range for the DHCP option is changed, the CECs get the new ips but do not get back to the Connected state on HMC.
• Fixed a problem with missing information for VIOS file-backed devices in create system plan.
• Provided a more descriptive error message for a failure involving add of virtual IO adapters when there is no free memory available on the server: "There is an insufficient amount of memory available on the managed system TestSystem to perform this operation. An additional (1 LMB) of memory is needed. If you want to perform this operation, you must free memory by removing memory from partitions."
• Fixed a problem where NTP is disabled anytime an internet VPN connection is used for callhome or remote support.
• Fixed a problem where a E35F0012 C1830B9A serviceable event is called home on each boot due to the presence of unsupported scheduled operations. The unsupported scheduled operations were created in older (Version 6) releases.
• Fixed a problem where the HMC GUI does not allow numeric starting hostnames.
• Enhancement so Service Representative comments made during repair option for hardware serviceable events are now saved in the problem when the problem is closed.
• Fixed a problem where service event E3550037 was reported if a user clicks the edit profile task with no profile selected.
• Added support for VIOS 2.2 operating environment install option via Deploy System Plan.
• Fixed a defect where the HMC was running out of memory when displaying a very large amount of utilization data either using the Web UI or using CLI lslparutil.
• Fixed a problem where the backup description was missing from the backup.
• Fixed a problem where viewing reference code history may fail with error HSCL1400 (784200) Fixed multiple security vulnerabilities.

Repair and Verify

• Fixed hang during a non-concurrent Repair & Verify procedure Exchange of an FSP card on a 9179-MHB system.
• Fixed a problem with BPH repair procedure for FHA/FHB.
• Minor change in IBM Power 770/780 Service panels to limit the remove/install of CEC drawer connector covers to only the drawer exchange procedure.
• Fixed a problem with repair procedure for SRC 14020081.
• Fixed a problem with repair procedure for GX+ adapters for FHA/FHB.

This package has the following known issues:

• If the Mover Service Partitions (MSPs) used in partition mobility operations have multiple IP addresses, then you may experience a significant performance degradation for the following operations: partition migration, partition migration validation, and the lslparmigr -r msp command. This degradation is due to the additional connectivity tests performed between each pair of source and destination MSP IP addresses.
  Workaround: Turn off the MSP attribute on any VIOS partition that is not needed as an MSP for partition mobility operations. For partition migration operations and partition migration validation operations, you can alternatively specify which source and destination MSP IP addresses you wish to use for the operation.
• Partition Activation Failure: For partitions that use Active Memory Sharing and that can also hibernation, the HMC may not allocate a reserved storage device of sufficient size, which results in activation failure. This issue is applicable to both RPA and IBM i partitions.
  Workaround: Adjust the maximum memory setting in the profile to ensure the reserved storage devices available in the pool are at least 120% bigger than the maximum memory value specified in the profile, and the try activating the partition again.

The following browsers have been tested.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

• Internet Explorer 6.0 and Internet Explorer 7.0 are supported.
• Internet Explorer 8.0 and later are not supported; however, the Internet Explorer compatibility mode resolves all known issues.
• If your browser is configured to use an internet proxy, then local internet addresses should be included in the exception list, consult your network administrator for more information. If you still need to use the proxy to get to the Hardware Management Console, enable Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections under the Advanced tab in your Internet Options window.

Firefox

• Firefox 1.5.0.7, 2.0 and 3 are supported.
• Firefox 4 is not supported; there are known issues.

Other web browser considerations

Session cookies need to be enabled in order for ASMI to work when connected to HMC remotely. The asm proxy code saves session information and uses it.

Internet Explorer

1. Select Tools -> Internet Options
2. Select Privacy tab and select 'Advanced'
3. Check if 'Always allow session cookies'
4. If not checked, check 'Override automatic cookie handling' and check 'Always allow session cookies'
5. The handle First-party Cookies and Third-party Cookies, you can choose either block or prompt or accept. Pprompt is preferred, in which case you will be prompted every time a site tries to write cookies. It may be a little annoying, but it is the safe thing to do. Some sites need to be allowed to write cookies.

Firefox

1. Tools -> Options
2. Select Cookies Tab
3. Select check box Allow sites to set cookies.
4. If you want to allow only specific sites then select 'Exceptions' and then you can just add this HMC to allow.

Notes:

1. To burn the ISO image to media, you must use DVD-R media
2. The HMC Install Corrective Service task has been modified to allow corrective service installation by using the .iso packaging of the corrective service files that you can download from IBM. There is no requirement to burn CD-R or DVD-R media to use these files to install the corrective service.
   • To install the updates over the network, select the .iso file in the Select Service Package panel of the Install Corrective Service utility.
   • To use USB flash media to install updates, copy the .iso file to the flash media, and then select the file when prompted.
3. The updhmc command line command has also been modified to use the .iso file for installing corrective service updates. To use the command, follow the syntax in this example:
   updhmc -t s -h <myservername> -f </home/updates/corrrective_service.iso> -u <HMC_username> -i

In all cases, the HMC application extracts the files needed to install the corrective service.
