This can be done by logging in under the 'Administrator' ID or, when logged in as a user in the administrator group. If logging into Microsoft Vista as 'Administrator", executing the wflash utility there are no additions steps require. Steps 2.1 - 2.4 and steps 5.1 - 5.3 can be executed without any additional instructions. If logging into Microsoft Vista, as a user, the user must select one of the following two ways to execute the wflash utility with Administrator privileges. A. Turn User Account Control (UAC) off. Procedure to turn User Account Control off: - Select and left click on start icon, select and left click on Control Panel. - Select and left click on User Accounts. - Select and left click User Accounts. - In User Account panel, select and left click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off'. - When User Account Control panel appears select and left click on 'Continue'. - In User Account Control On or Off panel, if 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your compute' box is checked, then uncheck the box using the mouse - Select OK and left click using the mouse. - When Microsoft Windows warning message 'You must restart your computer to apply these changes', select and left click 'Restart Now'. The system will restart, when Microsoft Vista login screen appears, login in using the same user account. After restart has completed, the administrator privileges are active. Steps 2.1 - 2.4 and steps 4.1 - 4.3 can be executed without any additional instructions. B. Executing wflash utility with Administrator Control Prompts. If User Account Control (UAC) is active, wflash execution must be executed with administrator approval. Steps 2.5 - 2.7 must be used when executing wflash utility (instead of steps 2.1 - 2.4) must be executed with administrator approval. Also for unattended mode operations steps 4.4 - 4.6 must be used instead of steps 4.1 - 4.3). 2.1 Step by step instructions for this code update (GUI) - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" by double-clicking the .EXE. - Choose "Perform Update" and click the "Next" button. - If the update is meant for the system on which it is running, the "Ready to Update System" window will appear. Click the "Update" button to continue. - Click the "Exit" button. 2.2 Step by step instructions for extracting the Windows update files (GUI) - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" by double-clicking the .EXE. - Choose "Extract to Hard Drive" and click the "Next" button. - Choose a directory into which the Windows update files will be saved in the "Save As" dialog. - The files extracted are all the files that are necessary to perform a BIOS update under Windows. Run "wflash" from a command line to update BIOS on 32-bit Windows or run "wflash64" from a command line to update BIOS on 64-bit Windows. - Click the "Exit" button to close the command prompt window. 2.3 Step by step instructions for extracting the DOS update files to diskette (GUI) - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" by double-clicking the .EXE. - Choose "Extract to Floppy" and click the "Next" button. - Place a diskette in the A: drive and press the "OK" button. - The diskette created is the DOS BIOS update diskette. - Click the "Exit" button. 2.4 Step by step instructions for extracting the DOS update files to diskette (command line) - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" with the following command line: ".exe -a -xd " where .exe is the downloaded update and is the drive to which the DOS update files will be extracted. Following are instructions to execute wflash utility with Administrator Control Prompts under Microsoft Vista operating system: 2.5 Step by step instructions for this code update (GUI) (after logging in as user) - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" by select and right click the .EXE icon. Select and left click on 'Run as administrator'. The User Account Control window pops up. Select and left click 'Allow I trust this program, I know where it's from or I've used it before.'. - Choose "Perform Update" and click the "Next" button. - If the update is meant for the system on which it is running, the "Ready to Update System" window will appear. Click the "Update" button to continue. - Click the "Exit" button. 2.6 Step by step instructions for extracting the Windows update files (GUI) - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" by select and right click the .EXE icon. The User Account Control window pops up. Select 'Allow I trust this program, I know where it's from or I've used it before.' and left click. - Choose "Extract to Floppy" and click the "Next" button. - Place a diskette in the A: drive and press the "OK" button. - The diskette created is the DOS BIOS update diskette. - Click the "Exit" button. 2.8 Step by step instructions for extracting the DOS update files to diskette (command line) - To extract the DOS update files to diskette from the command line, select and right click on 'Command Prompt" icon. Select and left click on 'Run as administrator'. The User Account Control message window pops up. Select and left click on 'Continue'. The Administrator Command Prompt window appears. - On the command line in the Administrator Command Prompt window change directories to where the update exe is. - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" with the following command line: ".exe -a -xd " where .exe is the downloaded update and is the drive to which the DOS update files will be extracted. 3.0 Crisis Recovery 3.1 To recover from BIOS corruption see readme file on BIOS recovery disk for instructions. 4.0 Unattended Mode 4.1 Performing the update in unattended mode - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" with the following command line: ".exe -s -a -s" where .exe is the downloaded update. 4.2 Extracting the Windows update files in unattended mode - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" with the following command line: ".exe -s -a -x " where .exe is the downloaded update and is the path to which the Windows update files will be extracted. 4.3 Running extracted Windows update files in unattended mode - Extract the Windows update files using Section 2.2 or Section 4.2 of this readme. - Run "wflash" from a command line to update BIOS on 32-bit Windows or run "wflash64" from a command line to update BIOS on 64-bit Windows. NOTE: To run extracted Windows update files on Windows PE, either a writable TEMP directory is required or the wflash.sys helper device driver must be extracted prior to running wflash.exe or wflash64.exe. To modify Windows PE to contain a writable TEMP directory, please consult the Windows PE documentation. To extract the wflash.sys device driver, run "wflash extractdriver" for 32-bit Windows PE or run "wflash64 extractdriver" for 64-bit Windows PE. The directory from which "wflash extractdriver" or "wflash64 extractdriver" is run must be writable for the driver to be extracted successfully. Following are instructions to execute wflash utility in unattended mode with Administrator Control Prompts under Microsoft Vista operating system: 4.4 Performing the update in unattended mode - To execute ".exe" from the command prompt window, select and right click the 'Command Prompt" icon. Select and left click 'Run as administrator'. The User Account Control window pops up. Select and left click 'Continue' The Administrator Command Prompt window appears. At the command line change the directory to the directory containing the "" exe. - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" with the following command line: ".exe -s -a -s" where .exe is the downloaded update. 4.5 Extracting the Windows update files in unattended mode - To execute ".exe" from the command prompt window, select and right click the 'Command Prompt" icon. Select and left click 'Run as administrator'. The User Account Control window pops up. Select and left click 'Continue' The Administrator Command Prompt window appears. At the command line change the directory to the directory containing the "" exe. - Run the "HC10 Windows BIOS Update" with the following command line: ".exe -s -a -x " where .exe is the downloaded update and is the path to which the Windows update files will be extracted. 4.6 Running extracted Windows update files in unattended mode - Extract the Windows update files using Section 2.7 or Section 4.5 of this readme. - If the Administrator Command Prompt display is not already present right click the 'Command Prompt" icon. Select and left click 'Run as administrator'. The User Account Control window pops up. Select and left click 'Continue' The Administrator Command Prompt window appears.
